Description
We had been in Custer State Park in South Dakota for eleven days taking pictures of the buffalo. Each day we stopped along the side of the road with all the other tourists. The buffalo have become very accustomed to people and they moved from one area to another crossing the road in front of or behind the cars that were lined up without paying any attention to them. If we stayed in our pickup, I felt safe. This foggy, misty morning we saw this bull along the side of the road and stopped because I wanted to get a picture of the fall colors with the buffalo in the foreground. It was no different from all the other times we photographed the buffalo from the safety of our pickup. As we sat there taking pictures, the bull started pawing the ground and then he rolled in the mud. It was a behavior we had seen several times before of the bulls in the herd, so it was not alarming. In an instant, he jumped to his feet and started bucking and snorting. There were no other buffalo around and I realized the cars were the object of his intentions and they were not friendly. It was time to move on. There are signs posted throughout Custer State Park that buffalo are dangerous animals and we always stayed in our pickup. I witnessed how quickly the situation can change and how unpredictable buffalo are.
